The day you land in the United States, your credit score does not exist. Not zero — nothing. Whatever you built over twenty years in Korea does not follow you across the Pacific. That blank file is why a well-paid engineer with a spotless record back home can get turned down for an apartment, a phone plan, and a car loan in the same week.
The good news is that the blank file fills faster than most people expect, and there is one route out of Korea specifically that most English-language guides never mention. Here is the whole path, in order.
First: How Long Does This Actually Take?
This is the question everyone actually wants answered, so here it is up front. The general timeline lenders and credit bureaus describe:
- 1–2 billing cycles after your first account opens — it starts reporting to the bureaus.
- About 6 months of reporting history — you need roughly this much before FICO will generate a score at all.
- 6–12 months — you have a usable score, often somewhere in the 600s.
- 12–24 months — you are treated as a normal applicant, and a “good” score of 670+ is realistic.
So the honest answer is: there is no way to have a score next month, but there is also no reason it should take five years. The people it takes five years for are usually the ones who waited a year before opening anything.
The Shortcut Most Guides Skip: Your Korean Credit History Can Count
A company called Nova Credit operates a product called Credit Passport, which pulls your credit file from a foreign bureau and translates it into a U.S.-format report a lender can read. South Korea is one of the supported countries.
Two things to understand clearly before you get excited:
- It is not a card and not an app. It is a data service that lenders subscribe to. You cannot “sign up for Nova Credit” the way you sign up for a bank — you use it at the moment you apply to a lender that accepts it.
- It does not create a U.S. score. It helps you get approved for something. The account you then open is what builds your actual U.S. file.
Which lenders accept it changes over time, and partnerships have come and gone — so check directly with the issuer you are applying to rather than trusting a blog post (including this one) about who accepts it this month. But if you had credit in Korea, it is worth asking, because being approved on day one instead of month six moves your whole timeline forward.
SSN or ITIN: You Need One, Not Necessarily the First
Almost every credit application asks for a taxpayer ID. If you are work-authorized, get the SSN — it is faster and accepted everywhere.
If you are not eligible for one, an ITIN (IRS Form W-7) is a legitimate alternative, and a growing number of issuers — including secured card programs and some major banks — open accounts on an ITIN. It takes longer to obtain and is accepted at fewer places, but it is enough to start a real credit file in your own name.
One warning. If any service offers you a “CPN” or a new credit identity as a shortcut, walk away. That is federal fraud, not a workaround. An ITIN is the legal path.
What to Open First
- A secured credit card. You put down a refundable deposit that usually becomes your limit, use the card lightly, and pay in full. This is the highest-approval-odds product for an empty file, and the main ones report to all three bureaus — which is the entire point. Confirm that before applying; a card that does not report does nothing for you.
- Authorized user on a family member’s card. If a spouse or relative has a long-held card with perfect payment history, being added can put that history on your file. It works best when the card is old and the balance is low.
- A credit-builder loan from a credit union — you “repay” into a locked savings account and get the money at the end. Slower, but it adds an installment account to your mix.
- Student cards, if you are enrolled. They are designed for exactly this situation.
You will need a bank account before most of this. If you have not opened one yet, start there: Opening Your First U.S. Bank Account. For specific starter cards, see Best First Credit Cards With No U.S. Credit History.
What the Score Is Actually Made Of
FICO runs 300 to 850. Roughly 670+ is good, 740+ is very good. Five factors, weighted:

Notice that the top two — payment history and utilization — are 65% of the score combined, and both are entirely under your control starting today. The other three are mostly a matter of time passing. That is why the practical advice is so short.
The Habits That Actually Move the Number
- Keep reported utilization under 30%, ideally under 10%. On a $500 secured card that means keeping the statement balance under $50. Here is the part people miss: the number that gets reported is your balance on the statement closing date, not what you owe after you pay. Paying down a few days before the statement closes lowers the reported figure even if you use the card heavily.
- Automate the minimum payment. Not because you should only pay the minimum — pay in full — but because one forgotten due date can sit on your report for seven years. Autopay the minimum as a floor, then pay the rest manually.
- Never close your oldest card. It anchors your average account age, which is the one factor you cannot buy back.
- Space out applications. Each hard inquiry costs a few points and they compound. Three applications in one month reads as distress to a lender.
- Pull your reports and check them. Errors are common, and a wrong collection account on your file is worth more damage than months of good behavior are worth in gains.
Where to Check, For Free
Your official reports from all three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) come from AnnualCreditReport.com — the only federally authorized source. Most banks and several free apps also show a score updated monthly. Checking your own is a soft pull and never costs you points, no matter how often you do it.
The Mistakes That Cost Newcomers Years
- Waiting. The single most expensive mistake. The clock does not start until an account starts reporting, so opening a small secured card in month one instead of month twelve is worth a full year of history.
- Using a debit card for everything. Debit activity builds nothing. It is invisible to the bureaus.
- Maxing the card even if you pay it off. The statement balance is what gets reported, so a maxed card looks maxed regardless of what you pay later.
- Closing old accounts to “simplify.”
- Ignoring a small bill. A $40 medical bill sent to collections does real, lasting damage — far out of proportion to the amount.

대상이 아니라면 ITIN(IRS Form W-7)이 합법적인 대안입니다.
