TSA PreCheck vs Global Entry vs CLEAR (2026): Which One Is Actually Worth It?

TSA PreCheck vs Global Entry 2026 comparison - hiusalife.com

The honest answer changed in 2025, and most guides still haven’t caught up. Here’s what each program actually gets you now, what it costs, and the one math problem that settles the choice for almost everyone.

First: PreCheck’s Most Famous Perk Is Gone

On July 8, 2025, DHS ended the shoes-off requirement at TSA checkpoints — for everyone, not just PreCheck members. That perk was the one most people could name, and it no longer differentiates anything. Officers can still ask you to remove shoes for additional screening, but the routine shoe shuffle is over in the standard lane too.

So the real question is whether what’s left justifies the fee. For most frequent flyers it still does — but the gap has narrowed, and it’s worth knowing exactly what you’re buying.

What TSA PreCheck Still Gets You

  • Laptop stays in your bag. This is now the biggest one — it’s the step that holds up the standard lane most.
  • Liquids bag stays packed (the 3-1-1 limits still apply; PreCheck doesn’t let you bring a full-size shampoo bottle).
  • Belt and light jacket stay on.
  • A shorter, faster-moving line — partly because everyone in it knows the routine.

One caveat worth knowing before you pay: enrollment has passed 20 million people, and PreCheck waits of 10–15 minutes now happen at big hubs during peak periods. A 10-minute PreCheck line still beats a 30-minute standard line — but don’t expect an empty lane.

What Global Entry Adds

Global Entry handles the other end of the trip: re-entering the U.S. from abroad. Instead of the immigration hall queue, you use a kiosk or facial-recognition lane and go. On a long-haul arrival at a busy airport, that can be the difference between five minutes and an hour.

The decisive detail: Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck at no extra charge.

And Then There’s CLEAR

CLEAR+ is a different product that people constantly confuse with PreCheck. It doesn’t change your screening — it verifies your identity biometrically and walks you to the front of whichever line you’re eligible for. You still take out the laptop unless you also have PreCheck.

It is also billed annually, and that’s where the math gets brutal.

The Cost Math (as of August 2026)

  • Global Entry — $120 for 5 years, PreCheck included. CBP moved all three of its trusted traveler programs to a flat $120 on October 1, 2024, its first increase since 2008.
  • TSA PreCheck — roughly $77–$85 for 5 years, depending on which enrollment provider you use.
  • CLEAR+ — about $219 for one year.

Line those up and the choice makes itself: a single year of CLEAR+ costs more than five years of Global Entry and five years of PreCheck combined — $219 against $205. Over a five-year window, CLEAR+ runs roughly nine times what Global Entry costs.

So Which One?

  • You leave the country even once in five years → Global Entry. For about $40 more than PreCheck alone you get both programs. This is the right answer for the large majority of people.
  • You will genuinely never fly internationally → PreCheck alone, and pocket the difference.
  • CLEAR+ only makes sense if your home airport has a long CLEAR lane advantage, you fly constantly, and someone else is paying — a credit card credit or an airline elite discount. Paying $219 a year out of pocket is hard to justify on the numbers, and it is a supplement to PreCheck, not a replacement.

How to Apply Without Overpaying

  • Check your credit cards first. A long list of travel cards reimburse the full Global Entry or PreCheck fee as a statement credit every four to five years — which makes it effectively free. Check before you pay for it yourself.
  • Apply only on the official Trusted Traveler Program site (ttp.dhs.gov). Third-party sites charge a markup for filling in the same form.
  • Interview slots are the bottleneck. Apply four to six months before a big trip. If you can’t find an appointment, use Enrollment on Arrival — many airports will complete your Global Entry interview when you land from an international flight, no appointment needed.
  • Watch for promotions. TSA has run periodic discounts, including a first-time-applicant promotion in May 2026.

The Free Alternative Nobody Uses

If you only fly internationally once every few years, Mobile Passport Control is a free CBP app that gets you into a separate, usually short arrivals line at participating airports. It’s not as fast as Global Entry and it doesn’t include PreCheck — but it costs nothing and requires no interview.

One More Thing: Your ID

None of these programs replace acceptable identification. REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025, and since February 1, 2026 travelers without a compliant license need a passport or another acceptable ID — with a paid short-term verification option reported at $45 covering a 10-day window. Bring the right ID regardless of what’s printed on your boarding pass.

💡 Tip: Global Entry membership also opens doors abroad through reciprocal arrangements — members can apply for expedited entry programs in partner countries including South Korea’s Smart Entry Service. If you fly one international route repeatedly, check whether that country has a partnership; it’s a free benefit most members never use.
