Hurricane Season 2026: How to Prepare, What to Stock, and Whether You Need Flood Insurance

Hurricane season preparation - go bag, home prep and the flood insurance trap - hiusalife.com

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 and peaks around September 10 — which means the most dangerous stretch of the year is right now. Here is what actually matters, including the one statistic that should change how you think about your own risk.

Where the 2026 Season Stands

In its August 6, 2026 update, NOAA maintained a below-normal forecast, citing a strong El Niño expected to persist through fall: 7 to 13 named storms, 2 to 6 hurricanes, and 0 to 2 major hurricanes, with a 75% chance the season finishes below normal. So far there have been two named storms — Arthur and Bertha — and no hurricanes.

Now the part that matters more than the forecast: a quiet season is not a safe season. Arthur was “just” a tropical storm and it produced record rainfall across parts of Louisiana and spawned tornadoes along the Gulf coast. Bertha made landfall in St. Bernard Parish. Seasonal outlooks predict basin-wide activity, not where storms go — and it only takes one.

The Statistic That Should Change Your Planning

Most people picture hurricane danger as wind and a coastline. The National Hurricane Center found that rainfall flooding accounted for 57% of all U.S. deaths from tropical cyclones between 2013 and 2022. Storms are also holding their strength farther inland than they used to.

Practically: if you live several hours from the coast, this article is still for you. Freshwater flooding is the leading killer, and it happens well away from storm surge. And never drive through standing water — you cannot judge depth, and a foot of moving water can carry most vehicles.

Know Your Zone First

Look up your evacuation zone on your county emergency management site. Evacuation orders are issued by zone, so knowing whether you are in Zone A or Zone C decides whether you leave or shelter. Learn the terms too: a watch means conditions are possible within 48 hours; a warning means they are expected within 36 hours. By the time a warning is issued, the window for calm preparation has closed.

The Supply Kit

  • Water — one gallon per person per day, minimum 3–7 days; two weeks is better if you have the space
  • Non-perishable food for the same period, plus a manual can opener
  • Medications — a two-week supply. Pharmacies close and stay closed after a storm
  • Flashlights and batteries — not candles, which are a fire risk
  • Battery or hand-crank radio for when cell networks fail
  • Power banks, charged in advance, plus a car charger
  • Cash — ATMs and card readers do not work without power
  • First aid kit, plus supplies for pets and babies if applicable

Generators Kill People After the Storm

This deserves its own heading because carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the leading causes of death after a hurricane passes, and it is entirely preventable. Run a portable generator outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from doors, windows, and vents. Never in a garage, even with the door open. Put battery-powered CO alarms on every level of the home. Let it cool before refueling, and store fuel outside the house.

Prepare the House

Bring in anything the wind can throw — patio furniture, grills, trash cans, planters. Trim branches near the roof and power lines early in the season. Know how to shut off your gas, water, and electricity. Fill your gas tank as soon as a storm enters the forecast, because stations run dry and then lose power. Photograph every room and your valuables before the storm; that documentation is what makes an insurance claim go smoothly.

The Insurance Trap Most People Miss

Standard homeowners and renters insurance does not cover flood damage. Wind is typically covered; rising water is not. Flood coverage is a separate policy through the National Flood Insurance Program or a private insurer, and there is normally a 30-day waiting period before it takes effect — so buying as a storm approaches accomplishes nothing.

Three things people get wrong:

  • “I’m not in a flood zone” is not protection. A substantial share of flood claims come from properties outside designated high-risk zones, where nobody was required to buy coverage and premiums are lowest.
  • Renters can buy it too. A contents-only flood policy covers your belongings without insuring the building, and it is one of the cheapest policies available. Almost no renters know it exists.
  • Coastal policies often carry a separate hurricane deductible — a percentage of your dwelling coverage rather than a flat dollar amount, which can be many times your normal deductible. Check which trigger applies in your state, since some are named-storm based.

Read the policy now, in the quiet part of the season, not after.

💡 Tip: Keep digital copies of your ID, insurance policies, and deeds in secure cloud storage, plus originals in a waterproof bag you can grab in 60 seconds. Rebuilding paperwork after a flood is often harder than replacing furniture. Download the FEMA app, enable Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone, and pick an out-of-state contact everyone in the family calls to check in — long-distance lines often work when local ones are jammed.
