The sky was the wrong color when we drove out. There were wildfires burning somewhere in the distance, and the whole Columbia River Gorge sat under a flat white haze — the kind where you can look straight at the sun. Fine ash drifted in the air. It was hot, and honestly I wondered on the way whether we should have picked a different day.
Then we walked up to the falls, and the temperature dropped. Not a little — noticeably, immediately. A 620-foot column of water falling into a rock basin generates its own weather, and standing at the base on a hot, smoky evening was the most comfortable I’d been all day. That contrast is the thing I remember most about the visit.
The 6 PM Thing Nobody Told Us
We arrived around 6 in the evening, mostly because that’s how the day worked out. There was no permit to show and nothing to pay. I assumed we’d gotten lucky.
It wasn’t luck. The timed-use permit for the I-84 parking lot is only required between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Arrive before 9 or after 6 and you don’t need one at all. In 2026 that permit window runs from May 22 through September 7.
So if you’re planning a visit in summer and don’t want to deal with reservations, the evening slot is the simplest answer — and it comes with a bonus, because the midday crowds have thinned out by then. Summer days in Oregon are long enough that 6 PM still gives you plenty of light.
How the Permit Actually Works
If you do go during the day, here’s the shape of it:
- It applies to the I-84 Exit 31 lot only, and only for private vehicles. It costs about $2 and is booked on Recreation.gov.
- Permits are released in two waves — 14 days ahead, then again 2 days ahead. If the first batch is gone, check back closer to your date.
- A permit does not guarantee a parking space. It grants access; the lot can still be full. ODOT’s TripCheck page shows live camera images of the lot.
- A few free same-day permits are handed out at the Gateway to the Gorge Visitor Center in Troutdale and the Cascade Locks Historical Museum.
- The small lot on the Historic Columbia River Highway is a separate operation with its own daily fee, and it holds very few cars.
About the Smoke
Late-summer wildfire haze is a normal part of visiting Oregon, and it changes what you get. The photos came out flat and grey-blue instead of the deep green you see in postcards, and distant ridgelines disappeared entirely. If you’re going specifically for photographs, check air quality before you commit to a date.
But the falls themselves were completely unaffected. The water was loud and cold and close, and the haze honestly gave the gorge a strange soft depth I didn’t mind. It’s worth going even on a smoky day — just adjust what you expect the pictures to look like.
Worth Knowing Before You Go
- It’s about 30 minutes east of Portland on I-84 — close enough to be an evening trip rather than a full-day expedition.
- The lower viewing plaza requires almost no walking. The paved path up to Benson Bridge is short but steep enough to feel it; the full trail to the top is a real hike.
- Bring a layer. The air at the base is genuinely cold, which is wonderful in August and less so otherwise.
- Other gorge waterfalls don’t need this permit. Wahkeena and Horsetail are free to park at; Latourell, Bridal Veil, and Angel’s Rest now charge an Oregon State Parks day-use parking fee as of spring 2026.
If you’re visiting Portland, this is the one nearby sight I’d tell people not to skip. Go at 6.

출발할 때부터 하늘색이 이상했어요. 멀리서 산불이 나고 있어서 컬럼비아 강 협곡 전체가 뿌연 흰빛에 덮여 있었거든요. 해를 똑바로 쳐다볼 수 있을 정도였어요. 공기 중에 재가 날렸고 더웠습니다. 솔직히 가는 길에 ‘오늘이 아니었나’ 싶었어요.
그런데 폭포 앞에 서니 온도가 뚝 떨어졌어요. 조금이 아니라 확실하게, 바로요. 185미터 높이에서 떨어지는 물기둥이 자기만의 날씨를 만들어내더라고요. 덥고 연기 자욱한 저녁에 그 아래 서 있는 게 하루 중 가장 시원했습니다. 이 대비가 이번 방문에서 제일 기억에 남아요.
아무도 안 알려준 ‘저녁 6시’
저녁 6시쯤 도착했어요. 일정이 그렇게 흘러간 것뿐이었는데, 보여줄 허가증도 없었고 낼 돈도 없었어요. 운이 좋았나 보다 했죠.
운이 아니었어요. I-84 주차장의 시간제 허가증은 오전 9시부터 오후 6시 사이에만 필요해요. 9시 전이나 6시 후에 도착하면 아예 필요가 없습니다. 2026년 기준으로 이 허가제 기간은 5월 22일부터 9월 7일까지예요.
그러니 여름에 가시는데 예약 절차가 번거롭다면 저녁 시간대가 가장 단순한 답이에요. 덤으로 한낮 인파도 빠진 뒤고요. 오리건의 여름 해는 길어서 6시에 가도 빛이 충분합니다.
허가증 제도는 이렇게 굴러가요
낮 시간에 가신다면 알아두실 것들이에요:
- I-84 Exit 31 주차장에만 적용되고 개인 차량만 해당돼요. 비용은 약 $2이고 Recreation.gov에서 예약합니다.
- 허가증은 두 번에 나눠 풀려요 — 도착 14일 전, 그리고 다시 2일 전이에요. 1차에 다 나갔으면 날짜가 가까워졌을 때 다시 확인해보세요.
- 허가증이 주차 자리를 보장하지는 않아요. 진입 권한일 뿐이라 주차장이 꽉 찰 수 있어요. ODOT TripCheck 페이지에서 주차장 실시간 카메라를 볼 수 있습니다.
- 당일 무료 허가증이 소량 배부돼요. 트라우트데일의 Gateway to the Gorge 방문자 센터와 Cascade Locks 역사박물관에서요.
- 히스토릭 컬럼비아 리버 하이웨이 쪽 작은 주차장은 별도로 운영되고 자체 일일 요금을 받아요. 자리는 아주 적습니다.
산불 연기에 대해
늦여름 산불 연무는 오리건 여행에서 흔한 일이고, 보이는 풍경을 바꿔놔요. 사진이 엽서에서 보던 짙은 초록 대신 납작한 회청색으로 나왔고, 멀리 있는 능선은 아예 사라졌어요. 사진이 주목적이라면 날짜를 정하기 전에 대기질을 확인해보세요.
그렇지만 폭포 자체는 전혀 영향이 없었어요. 물소리는 크고 차갑고 가까웠고, 오히려 연무가 협곡에 묘하게 부드러운 깊이를 만들어주더라고요. 연기 낀 날에도 갈 값어치가 있어요. 다만 사진에 대한 기대치만 조정하시면 됩니다.
가기 전에 알아두면 좋은 것
- 포틀랜드에서 동쪽으로 I-84 따라 30분 정도예요. 하루를 통째로 빼지 않아도 저녁에 다녀올 수 있는 거리죠.
- 아래쪽 전망 광장까지는 거의 안 걸어요. 벤슨 브리지까지 올라가는 포장길은 짧지만 경사가 있어서 숨이 차고, 정상까지 가는 트레일은 제대로 된 등산이에요.
- 겉옷을 챙기세요. 폭포 아래 공기가 정말 차가워요. 8월엔 축복이지만 다른 계절엔 다릅니다.
- 협곡의 다른 폭포들은 이 허가증이 필요 없어요. Wahkeena와 Horsetail은 주차가 무료이고, Latourell·Bridal Veil·Angel’s Rest는 2026년 봄부터 오리건 주립공원 주차 요금을 받습니다.
