White Sands National Park: Why Our Walmart Sled Barely Moved on the Dunes

We had driven across Arizona to get here, so by the time we reached the visitor center at White Sands the plan was already fixed: buy a sled, find a dune, go fast. We picked one up at the Walmart in town, hiked up a slope, sat down, and… inched forward about two feet before stopping.

It turns out the sand here is not what you think it is, and that one fact explains everything about sledding at White Sands.

It Is Gypsum, Not Ordinary Sand

Most dunes in the world are quartz. White Sands is gypsum — the same soft mineral used to make drywall — and this is the largest gypsum dunefield on Earth, roughly 275 square miles of it. It became a national park in 2019 after decades as a national monument.

Two consequences you feel immediately:

The sand is cool underfoot, even in summer. Gypsum holds water and reflects light, so you can walk barefoot on a hot afternoon. This is genuinely strange the first time.
The grains are rough, not slick. Gypsum crystals grip each other. That is why a sled that would fly on snow simply stops.

The One Thing Nobody Tells You: Wax

The sled is only half the equipment. You need a bar of wax, and without it the ride is a slow scoot rather than a slide.

Wax sells for roughly $1.50 to $3 a bar at the visitor center gift shop, at the back of the building. Warm it in your hands and rub it in circles across the whole underside of the sled.
Reapply every few runs. It wears off fast. This is the step people skip.
A round plastic snow saucer is the right shape. No metal, no sharp edges, no runners.

The gift shop sells saucers too, around $25 new and less for a used one, so if you would rather not carry a sled through your whole road trip you can buy it on arrival. The Walmart in Alamogordo is the cheaper option — just remember to buy wax separately, because Walmart does not sell it. That was our mistake.

Technique Matters More Than You Would Expect

Pick one run and repeat it. Loose gypsum packs down as you use it, so the fifth run on the same track is dramatically faster than the first. Hopping between dunes is why our early attempts felt hopeless.
Look for a dune that already has sled marks. Somebody has done the packing for you.
Check the bottom before you go. You want a gradual, sandy run-off. Where the dune meets the desert floor the ground can be hard and the stop abrupt.
Go feet first, and expect shorter rides than snow even when everything is right.

Climb one dune and stay on it — the track packs down with every run.

The biggest dunes with the least vegetation are at the north end of Dunes Drive, near the Alkali Flat trailhead. Sledding is not allowed on the marked nature trails or the Interdune Boardwalk.

The Sunset Is the Real Reason to Come

Sledding is what gets the kids into the car. The sunset is what you will actually remember.

A white surface stretching to the horizon does something no other landscape does with evening light. The dunes take the color directly — pink, then gold, then a cold blue — while the Sacramento Mountains go flat black behind them. There is no middle ground and nothing to break the line. Everyone around us stopped talking at about the same moment.

Plan for it deliberately. The park closes at sunset but visitors are given time to exit afterward, so climb a dune well before the sun drops and simply sit. Bring a layer; the temperature falls quickly once the light goes.

Practical Notes

Entry is per vehicle, and the America the Beautiful annual pass covers it. If you visit several parks a year the pass pays for itself quickly.
Hours run from 7 a.m. to sunset — earlier than most national parks. Check the day you go.
The park sits inside White Sands Missile Range. The highway and the park road close for missile tests, sometimes for a few hours. These closures are posted in advance, and driving out without checking is how people lose an afternoon.
Sunscreen and sunglasses are not optional. The glare off white gypsum is severe from every direction, including below.
Bring more water than feels reasonable. Cool sand disguises how dry the air is.
Taking sand home is illegal. Leave it.

We went back a second day. Not for the sledding, though our younger one would say otherwise.

화이트샌드 국립공원: 월마트 썰매가 안 미끄러진 이유

애리조나를 가로질러 뉴멕시코까지 달려온 터라, 화이트샌드 방문자 센터에 도착했을 땐 계획이 이미 정해져 있었어요. 썰매 사고, 언덕 찾고, 신나게 내려온다. 시내 월마트에서 썰매를 하나 사고, 모래 언덕을 올라, 앉았는데… 1미터쯤 가다가 멈췄습니다.

여기 모래가 생각하는 그 모래가 아니더라고요. 그리고 그 사실 하나가 화이트샌드 썰매의 모든 것을 설명합니다.

석회가 아니라 석고(gypsum)입니다

세계 대부분의 사구는 석영(quartz) 모래예요. 화이트샌드는 석고입니다. 건축 자재인 석고보드를 만드는 바로 그 광물이고, 이곳이 지구상 최대의 석고 사구 지대예요. 면적이 약 275 제곱마일(약 712㎢). 오랫동안 국가기념물이었다가 2019년에 국립공원으로 승격됐습니다.

도착하자마자 몸으로 느껴지는 결과가 두 가지 있어요.

한여름에도 모래가 시원합니다. 석고는 물을 머금고 빛을 반사해서, 더운 오후에도 맨발로 걸을 수 있어요. 처음 밟으면 진짜 이상한 기분입니다.
입자가 미끄럽지 않고 거칩니다. 석고 결정끼리 서로 붙잡아요. 눈이었다면 쭉 내려갔을 썰매가 그냥 서버리는 이유가 이겁니다.

아무도 안 알려주는 준비물: 왁스

썰매는 준비물의 절반일 뿐이에요. 왁스 한 개가 반드시 있어야 합니다. 이게 없으면 미끄러지는 게 아니라 엉덩이로 밀고 내려오는 수준이에요.

왁스는 방문자 센터 뒤쪽 기념품점에서 개당 $1.50~3 정도. 손으로 살짝 데운 다음 썰매 바닥 전체에 원을 그리며 문지릅니다.
몇 번 타고 나면 다시 발라야 해요. 금방 닳습니다. 다들 이 단계를 빼먹습니다.
모양은 둥근 플라스틱 눈썰매(saucer)가 정답. 금속 부품이나 날카로운 모서리가 있는 건 안 됩니다.

기념품점에서 썰매도 팔아요. 새것 $25 안팎, 중고는 더 쌉니다. 로드트립 내내 썰매를 싣고 다니기 싫으면 현지 구매가 낫고요. 알라모고도(Alamogordo) 월마트가 더 저렴하지만 — 왁스는 따로 챙기세요. 월마트엔 안 팝니다. 저희가 딱 이걸 몰랐어요.

기술이 생각보다 중요합니다

한 코스를 정해서 반복하세요. 푸석한 석고 모래는 탈수록 다져집니다. 같은 자리 다섯 번째 활강은 첫 번째와 비교가 안 되게 빨라요. 저희가 초반에 절망했던 이유가 언덕을 계속 옮겨 다녀서였습니다.
이미 썰매 자국이 난 언덕을 고르세요. 누군가 다져놓은 길입니다.
내려가기 전에 아래를 확인하세요. 완만하게 모래로 이어지는 착지 구간이 좋아요. 사구가 사막 바닥과 만나는 지점은 땅이 단단해서 급정거가 됩니다.
발부터 내려가고, 다 갖춰도 눈썰매보다는 짧게 간다는 걸 감안하세요.

식물이 적고 사구가 큰 곳은 Dunes Drive 북쪽 끝, Alkali Flat 트레일헤드 근처예요. 자연 관찰 트레일과 Interdune Boardwalk에서는 썰매 금지입니다.

진짜 이유는 석양이었습니다

해가 넘어가기 직전. 하얀 지면이 하늘색을 그대로 받습니다.

썰매는 아이들을 차에 태우는 명분이고, 기억에 남는 건 석양이에요.

지평선까지 하얀 지면이 깔려 있으면 저녁 빛이 다른 곳과 전혀 다르게 작동합니다. 사구가 색을 그대로 받아요. 분홍에서 금색으로, 다시 차가운 파랑으로. 그 뒤로 새크라멘토 산맥은 완전히 검게 눌러앉고요. 중간 톤이 없고 선을 끊는 것도 없습니다. 주변 사람들이 거의 동시에 말을 멈추더라고요.

작정하고 계획하세요. 공원은 일몰에 닫지만 그 후 나갈 시간은 줍니다. 해가 떨어지기 한참 전에 사구 하나 올라가서 그냥 앉아 계시면 돼요. 겉옷 한 장 챙기세요. 빛이 사라지면 기온이 훅 떨어집니다.

실용 정보

입장료는 차량당이고, America the Beautiful 연간 패스로 커버됩니다. 1년에 국립공원 몇 군데만 가도 패스가 이득이에요.
운영 시간은 오전 7시부터 일몰까지 — 다른 국립공원보다 이릅니다. 가는 날 기준으로 확인하세요.
공원이 화이트샌드 미사일 시험장 안에 있습니다. 미사일 시험이 있으면 고속도로와 공원 도로가 몇 시간씩 폐쇄돼요. 사전 공지가 뜨니 출발 전 확인 안 하면 반나절을 날립니다.
선크림과 선글라스는 선택이 아닙니다. 하얀 석고에서 반사되는 빛이 사방에서, 심지어 아래에서도 들어와요.
물은 넉넉하다 싶을 만큼. 모래가 시원해서 건조함이 잘 안 느껴집니다.
모래를 가져가는 건 불법입니다. 두고 오세요.

저희는 다음 날 한 번 더 갔습니다. 썰매 때문은 아니었어요. 물론 둘째는 다르게 말하겠지만요.
