Most big-bank checking and savings accounts pay a rate close to zero, which quietly costs you money every month you leave a balance sitting there. Moving cash to the right account is one of the easiest financial upgrades available — no risk tolerance required.
High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA)
An online savings account paying far more than a traditional bank, with money still available whenever you need it. This is the natural home for an emergency fund. The rate is variable, so it moves as interest rates move. Transfers to your main bank typically take one to a few business days, which is fine for emergencies but not for tomorrow’s rent.
Certificate of Deposit (CD)
You lock money in for a fixed term — three months to five years — in exchange for a fixed rate that won’t drop if rates fall. The trade-off is an early withdrawal penalty, usually several months of interest. Good for money you know you won’t touch, like a house down payment two years out.
A common approach is a CD ladder: split the money across several terms so a portion matures regularly. You get some of the higher long-term rate while keeping access to cash at intervals.
Money Market Accounts and Funds
A money market account at a bank works like savings with rates in a similar range, sometimes adding check-writing or a debit card. A money market fund at a brokerage is different — it’s an investment, not a bank deposit, so it isn’t FDIC insured, though these funds hold very short-term instruments. Know which one you’re buying.
Two Rules That Protect You
- FDIC insurance (or NCUA at credit unions) protects deposits up to a standard limit per depositor, per bank, per ownership category. If your balance approaches that limit, split it across institutions.
- Interest is taxable. You’ll receive a 1099-INT, and the interest is added to your income. Note that Treasury bills and many Treasury money market funds are exempt from state income tax, which matters in high-tax states.
💡 Tip: Before chasing the highest advertised rate, check the conditions: minimum balance, monthly fees, whether the top rate is a short promotional teaser, and how long transfers take. A slightly lower rate at a bank you can actually reach on the phone is often the better account — and remember that any of these still lose to inflation over decades, so long-term money belongs in investments, not savings.
