Moving in America is less about packing and more about paperwork — and about two decisions people make too fast: which neighborhood, and which mover. Get either one wrong and it costs far more than the move itself.
Here is the full timeline, plus the two verification steps that most guides skip entirely.

Before You Sign: Check the Block, Not the City
City-level crime statistics are close to useless — safety varies street by street. These free tools go to the block level:
- CrimeMapping.com and SpotCrime — recent police-reported incidents plotted on a map. Zoom to the actual address.
- FBI Crime Data Explorer (cde.ucr.cjis.gov) — official statistics by city and state.
- Niche.com and AreaVibes — letter grades for crime, schools, and livability in one view.
- City-Data.com — deep demographic detail plus local forums where residents talk candidly.
- NSOPW.gov — the national sex offender registry, worth checking if you have children.
- Search [city name] crime map — many police departments publish their own live dashboards.
Then go stand there. Visit the block on a weeknight and again on a weekend afternoon. Nothing online tells you what the street sounds like at 10 p.m., or whether the parking situation is a daily war.
Vetting the Mover: The Step That Prevents the Worst Outcome
The nightmare scenario in American moving is the hostage load: a low phone quote wins your deposit, your belongings go on the truck, and then the price doubles. Since your things are already loaded, you have no leverage. FMCSA receives thousands of these complaints a year.
It is preventable in about two minutes:
- Get the USDOT number. Every licensed interstate mover has one, and federal law requires it on their trucks and advertising. No USDOT number means unlicensed — walk away.
- Look it up at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. Operating status must read Active, and cargo and liability insurance should be on file. Inactive, Revoked, or Out of Service means do not book, no matter how good the price is.
- Find out if you are talking to a broker or a carrier. A broker sells your job to whichever carrier bids lowest — so the company you vetted is not the company that shows up. Ask directly, and make sure the USDOT number on your paperwork belongs to the company actually doing the move.
- Refuse a quote given over the phone with no inventory. A real binding estimate follows a video walkthrough or in-home survey and lists stairs, elevator, access, and specialty items as separate lines. A five-minute phone number based on a room count is how the scam begins.
The insurance detail nobody reads: the free default coverage is released value, which pays about 60 cents per pound per item. A 10-pound laptop is worth $6 under that rule. If your shipment contains anything you would be upset to lose, pay for full value protection instead.
If something goes wrong, complaints go to protectyourmove.gov — FMCSA can issue penalties and revoke operating authority.
6–8 Weeks Out: Plan
Set a budget and get at least three written estimates. If you are renting a truck yourself, book early — prices spike at month-end, when most leases turn over. Start decluttering now: you pay to move every box, so the cheapest box is the one you do not take. Moving to another state? Look up the new state’s DMV rules and get car insurance quotes before you go; premiums can change dramatically across a state line.
3–4 Weeks Out: Book and Notify
Confirm the mover and the date. Schedule utilities off at the old place and on at the new one — electricity, gas, water, trash, and especially internet, where installation appointments can be weeks out. Start packing what you will not need, labeling every box by destination room rather than by contents.
1–2 Weeks Out: The Address-Change Blitz
File USPS mail forwarding at usps.com. The official identity-verification charge is about a dollar — lookalike sites charging $40 or more are a common scam, and they rank high in search results. Check the URL.
Then update your address with: banks and credit cards, employer HR and payroll, health insurance, phone plan, subscriptions, delivery accounts, and your children’s school records.
Pack an essentials box that rides with you, not on the truck: passports and immigration documents, chargers, medications, toiletries, a change of clothes. If the truck is delayed a week — and it happens — this box is the difference between an inconvenience and a crisis.
Moving Week and After
- Photograph the empty old place — every room, floor, and wall. This is your evidence when the security deposit comes back short. See renting your first U.S. apartment for how deposit disputes work.
- Photograph the meters at both properties on the day.
- Transfer or cancel renter’s insurance.
- Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration at the DMV — most states allow somewhere between 10 and 90 days after you establish residency, and the clock starts without anyone telling you. Details: registering a car in the USA.
- Register to vote if you are eligible, and find an in-network doctor and pharmacy in the new area before you need one.
Current as of August 2026. DMV deadlines, utility procedures, and carrier requirements vary by state — confirm with official state and federal sites. General information only.

- CrimeMapping.com, SpotCrime —
- FBI Crime Data Explorer(cde.ucr.cjis.gov) —
- Niche.com, AreaVibes —
- City-Data.com —
- NSOPW.gov —
- safer.fmcsa.dot.gov에서 조회하세요. Inactive·Revoked·Out of Service면 아무리 싸도 계약 금지.
문제가 생기면 protectyourmove.gov에 신고합니다.
