In most of the U.S., a car is not optional, and the value is in the used market. But American car buying rewards preparation and punishes politeness: the same car, the same day, can cost two buyers thousands of dollars apart. Here is how to find a good one, check it properly, and negotiate the only number that matters. Updated August 2026.

🔎 Where to look
- Private sellers — usually the lowest price, but the sale is final and there is no warranty.
- Franchise dealers — more expensive, and the source of certified pre-owned (CPO) cars with a manufacturer inspection and warranty. The safest option if this is your first U.S. car.
- Independent used lots — in between, with enormous quality variance. Read the dealer’s reviews before the car’s listing.
- Online retailers — delivered to your door with a return window, at a premium price.
Whatever the source, get the VIN before you get attached and pull a vehicle history report: accident records, title status (avoid salvage and flood titles), and whether the odometer reading is consistent over time. As a reference point, average U.S. use is roughly 12,000–15,000 miles a year, so a five-year-old car around 60,000–75,000 miles is normal — far below that is worth asking about, not just celebrating.
🔧 The step you never skip
Before money changes hands, pay an independent mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) — roughly $100–200, and the best-spent money in the whole process. If a seller refuses one, walk away; the refusal is the answer. Drive it yourself too: highway speed, hard braking, a genuine cold start, air conditioning and heat, every window and light. Look underneath for rust, which matters enormously in states that salt the roads. In some states the seller is responsible for a current emissions or safety certificate — in California, for example, the seller generally must provide a valid smog certificate — so confirm who is paying for what before you agree on a price.
💰 Negotiate one number, not four
Look up the market value for that exact year, trim, and mileage before you talk price. Then negotiate the total out-the-door price — never the monthly payment, which hides a longer loan term and bundled extras. A message that works, sent to several dealers at once: Please send your best out-the-door price on stock number ____, including all fees and taxes. I am comparing three dealers this week and will buy from whoever is lowest. Written quotes are harder to walk back than showroom promises.
🧾 Which fees are real
- Not negotiable: sales tax, title, registration. These are set by the state and identical everywhere.
- Negotiable in practice: documentation fees (capped in some states, not others), dealer prep, and anything labeled a market adjustment — which is simply a markup with a formal-sounding name.
- Optional, usually skippable: extended warranty, paint and fabric protection, VIN etching, nitrogen-filled tires. You can decline every one of these and still buy the car.
🏦 Financing when your credit is new
Get pre-approved by a bank or credit union before you set foot on the lot. It gives you a rate for the dealer to beat and removes most of the pressure from the finance office. A short U.S. credit history means a higher rate — a larger down payment, a co-signer, or a relationship with a bank you already hold accounts at all help, and credit unions are often the most flexible with thin files. Building the score itself is covered in how to build U.S. credit from zero. You also need insurance before you drive away, so have a policy ready to activate.
🚩 Red flags
- A price far below market for no stated reason.
- A seller who will not meet in person, or who wants payment before you see the car.
- A title not in the seller’s name — known as title jumping — or missing entirely.
- Pressure to sign today for a today-only price.
- Refusal of an independent inspection.
- Fresh undercoating or overwhelming air freshener, which can hide rust, flood damage, or smoke.
✅ The first two weeks after you buy
Transfer the title and register the car — most states allow roughly 10 to 30 days and charge penalties after that. Bring the signed title, the bill of sale, and proof of insurance to the DMV; private-party buyers usually handle this themselves. Then activate the insurance policy, keep the bill of sale somewhere safe for tax time, and get a baseline oil change and fluid check so you know where the maintenance clock actually stands.

Please send your best out-the-door price on stock number ____, including all fees and taxes. I am comparing three dealers this week and will buy from whoever is lowest.
