The American Resume and Interview (2026): What Hiring Managers Actually Expect

A Korean résumé and an American résumé are different documents with different rules — and a strong candidate can get filtered out simply for formatting a good career the wrong way. Here is what the U.S. hiring process expects, from the document to the thank-you email, with the parts that specifically trip up applicants who built their careers in Korea.

US resume rules: no photo or age, one page, achievements not duties, beat the ATS with a simple layout, use the STAR method, always send a thank-you

🚫 What NOT to Include

This surprises most newcomers. A U.S. résumé should not include a photo, your date of birth or age, marital status, gender, nationality, or a family register. U.S. employment law restricts hiring decisions based on protected characteristics, so including them creates legal awkwardness — many companies discard résumés with photos for exactly that reason. Also skip the line “References available upon request”; it wastes space and everyone assumes it.

📄 What a U.S. Résumé Looks Like

One page is standard for most candidates (two is acceptable with 10+ years of experience). Structure: name and contact details, an optional short summary, then work experience in reverse chronological order, followed by education and skills. Under each job, write accomplishments, not duties — and quantify them. “Responsible for social media” says little; “Grew Instagram following 40% in six months” says everything. Start each bullet with a strong verb: led, built, reduced, launched, negotiated. Include a GPA only if it is strong and you graduated within the last few years.

🤖 Getting Past the ATS

Most mid-size and large employers screen résumés through applicant tracking software before a human sees them. To survive it: use a simple single-column layout without tables, text boxes, or graphics; keep standard section headings; save as PDF unless the posting says otherwise; and mirror the exact keywords in the job description. If the posting says “project management,” write “project management” — not “managed projects.” Tailoring each application beats sending fifty identical ones.

🇰🇷 The Parts That Specifically Trip Up Korean Applicants

  • Nobody here knows your former employer. A name that carries instant weight in Seoul may mean nothing to a U.S. recruiter. Add a half-line descriptor after the company name — industry, size, revenue or headcount — so the scale of what you did is visible.
  • Translate the job title, not the rank. Korean title ladders (대리, 과장, 차장, 부장) do not map onto U.S. titles. Use the closest functional American title (Senior Analyst, Manager, Director) and let the bullets show the scope.
  • Foreign degrees often need an evaluation. Many employers, licensing boards, and graduate programs ask for a credential evaluation from a service such as WES or ECE that states the U.S. equivalency of your Korean degree. It takes weeks and costs money — start it before you need it, not when an offer is pending.
  • Be consistent with your name. Whichever form you use — Korean name, English name, or both — keep it identical across the résumé, LinkedIn, and the documents you will hand over at onboarding. Mismatches slow down background checks and I-9 verification.
  • Two questions appear on almost every application. “Are you legally authorized to work in the United States?” and “Will you now or in the future require sponsorship for employment visa status?” They are separate questions. If you hold a green card, citizenship, or an unrestricted EAD, the answers are yes and no — and it is worth saying so plainly, because “no sponsorship needed” removes the single biggest hesitation a hiring manager has.

💼 If You Do Need Sponsorship (2026 Status)

The H-1B landscape has been unusually turbulent. A September 2025 proclamation imposed a $100,000 fee on certain new H-1B petitions for beneficiaries abroad. A Massachusetts federal court vacated the policy on June 8, 2026, and on July 24, 2026 the First Circuit declined to stay that ruling — so as of this writing the fee is not being collected, though the appeal continues and the proclamation is set to expire on its own terms in September 2026 unless extended.

Two practical notes: the fee never applied to extensions, amendments, or change-of-employer petitions for people already in H-1B status, and it never touched green card holders, citizens, or L-1, O-1 and TN holders. But the uncertainty made some employers gun-shy about sponsorship generally, so if you need it, raise it early rather than at offer stage — and verify the current status before relying on any of this.

💬 The Interview: Behavioral Questions

American interviews lean heavily on behavioral questions — “Tell me about a time you handled a conflict,” “Describe a project that failed.” The expected answer format is STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Prepare five or six stories from your career that you can adapt to most questions, and always end with the outcome and what you learned. Two cultural notes worth naming: describing your own contributions clearly is expected here, not immodest — saying “our team did it” without your role can read as vague. And always have questions ready when they ask if you have any; having none is read as low interest.

💵 Salary Conversations

Pay transparency is now the norm in much of the country. As of 2026, roughly 16 states plus Washington, D.C. have pay transparency laws on the books, and 12 states require the salary range in the job posting itself: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and Washington. California tightened its rule effective January 1, 2026 (SB 642), redefining the posted “pay scale” as a good-faith estimate of what the employer actually expects to pay.

One rule that works in your favor: for remote roles, the law generally follows where the work can be performed, not where the company is headquartered. A remote job that could be done from New York or California usually has to show a range even if the employer sits in a state with no such law.

Several states also ban asking about your salary history — so in most cases you do not have to disclose what you earned before, in Korea or here. Research the market range for the role in your metro area, give a range rather than a single number if asked, and remember that base salary is only part of it: signing bonus, PTO, remote flexibility, and the retirement match are all negotiable. A polite counter rarely costs anyone an offer.

✅ After the Interview

Send a thank-you email within 24 hours to everyone you met — short, specific, referencing something from the conversation. It is a genuine differentiator because plenty of candidates skip it. Then follow up once if you have not heard back by the date they mentioned. And keep applying while you wait; nothing is final until an offer is signed.

One more thing worth saying: networking drives a large share of U.S. hiring. Alumni groups, professional associations, LinkedIn connections, and community organizations open doors that job boards never will. A referral moves your résumé to the top of the pile.
