FAFSA and College Financial Aid (2026): How U.S. Families Actually Pay for College

The sticker price of an American university is rarely what families actually pay. The system that closes that gap is financial aid — and it starts with one form that too many immigrant families skip because they assume they won’t qualify.

Start With the FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the gateway to federal grants, work-study, and federal student loans — and most states and colleges use it to award their own aid too. It’s free to file at studentaid.gov, and it opens in the fall for the following academic year.

File it even if you think your income is too high. Some aid isn’t need-based, many colleges require the FAFSA for their own scholarships, and formulas account for multiple children in college. Filing costs nothing; not filing can cost thousands. Some private colleges additionally require the CSS Profile, which is a separate form with its own fee.

Know What Kind of Aid You’re Being Offered

  • Grants — need-based money you don’t repay. The best kind.
  • Scholarships — usually merit-based, from the college, private organizations, or community groups.
  • Work-study — a subsidized part-time campus job.
  • Federal student loans — borrowed money with fixed rates and federal protections like income-driven repayment.
  • Private loans — from banks, with fewer protections. Treat these as the last resort, after exhausting federal options.

An award letter that looks generous can be mostly loans. Add up the grants and scholarships only, subtract that from the total cost of attendance, and what remains is what your family truly pays or borrows. Compare schools on that number, not the headline.

The Appeal Nobody Makes

Financial aid offers can be appealed. If your family’s circumstances changed — a job loss, reduced income, high medical costs, or another child starting college — write to the financial aid office and ask for a professional judgment review with documentation. Colleges also sometimes match competing offers. This conversation is normal, and most families never have it.

💡 Tip: Apply early — some aid is first-come, first-served, and deadlines vary by state and school. Also look beyond national scholarship databases to local sources: community foundations, employers, churches, and Korean-American associations often have smaller awards with far fewer applicants, which makes the odds much better.
