Planning a domestic flight this year? Check the upper corner of your driver’s license for a star before you pack. REAL ID has been enforced at every TSA checkpoint since May 7, 2025, and since February 1, 2026 arriving without a compliant ID can cost you $45 plus up to 30 minutes of extra screening. Here is where things stand as of August 2026.
What Changed
The REAL ID Act set federal security standards for state-issued IDs back in 2005. After roughly two decades of delays, TSA began enforcing it on May 7, 2025, and a standard license without the star no longer works on its own for domestic flights, many federal buildings, or military bases. The 2026 change is TSA ConfirmID: since February 1, adults 18 and older who show up without an acceptable ID can pay a $45 fee to have their identity verified instead of simply being turned away. TSA says more than 94% of passengers already carry an acceptable ID, so the fee affects a small minority — but it is a real cost if you are in it.
Which IDs Work at the Checkpoint
Any one of these is enough: a REAL ID-compliant license or state ID (star in the upper corner — California’s shows a golden bear with a star); a U.S. passport or passport card; a valid passport issued by another country (a Korean passport is fully acceptable for domestic flights); a Permanent Resident Card (I-551); a USCIS Employment Authorization Card (I-766); a DHS trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST); a U.S. military ID, including dependent IDs; or an Enhanced Driver’s License. TSA currently accepts these documents up to two years past their expiration date. A temporary paper license is not accepted.
How to Get a REAL ID (DMV Checklist)
Apply through your state DMV — most states let you complete the application online and finish in person. Bring: 📄 one proof of identity and date of birth (U.S. birth certificate or unexpired passport; non-citizens bring a green card, I-766, or unexpired foreign passport with immigrant visa); 📄 proof of your Social Security number showing all nine digits (SSN card, W-2, or pay stub); 📄 two proofs of state residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease, or government mail); 📄 name-change documents if your current name differs from your birth certificate (marriage certificate or court order — the single most common reason applications get sent home). Immigration documents are checked through DHS’s SAVE system, which can add several days. Some states print the card the same day; others mail it in about 2–4 weeks, and appointment slots at busy metro DMVs are often booked 4–8 weeks out.
If You Get to the Airport Without One
Pay the $45 ConfirmID fee ahead of time at Pay.gov (bank account, debit card, credit card, Venmo, or PayPal). One payment covers a 10-day travel window starting from the date you enter, so a round trip inside 10 days is a single $45; a longer trip means paying twice. Bring the confirmation email — you show it at the checkpoint, and TSA then attempts to verify your identity, a process that can take up to 30 minutes and is not guaranteed to succeed. If you have not pre-paid, you must leave the line to pay and lose your place.
Quick Tips
✅ Children under 18 do not need ID when flying domestically with an adult companion; the $45 fee applies only to travelers 18 and older. ✅ REAL ID covers domestic flights and federal facilities — international travel still requires your passport. ✅ Keep a passport in your carry-on as backup while a new license is in the mail. ✅ If your airport supports TSA digital ID, adding your license to your phone wallet speeds up the line — but carry the physical card too. ✅ Already have Global Entry or PreCheck? That card counts as acceptable ID on its own (see TSA PreCheck vs Global Entry). ✅ New to a U.S. license? Start with Using Your Korean Driver’s License in the USA.
Information current as of August 2026 and for general reference only. Required documents and processing times vary by state and change over time — confirm with TSA.gov and your state DMV before you travel.
